Friday Sports Update

Tonight The Chicago Blackhawks are in Tampa to face the Lightning.  The two teams will be meeting for the second time in three days.  Chicago fell 5-1 to Tampa on Wednesday in the season opener. Blackhawks also face the Florida Panthers on Sunday.

 

The Blackhawks did announce yesterday they have placed captain Jonathan Toews and young center Kirby Dach on long-term injured reserve.  The move means that each player must miss at least 10 games and 24 days. 

 

Also tonight the Chicago Bulls are back in action tonight in Oklahoma City to face the Thunder.  Chicago had its game against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The 4-7 Bulls take on the Mavericks in Dallas on Sunday.

 

This weekend in College basketball, 

Northern Illinois travels to Muncie Indiana to take on Ball State. The Huskies are looking to win two in the for the first time this season after beating Akron 67-65 on Tuesday.                                       

Illinois State host the Indiana State  Sycamores in a two game series this weekend at the Redbird Arena. ISU is 4-6 on the season. 

 

13th ranked Illinois hosts Ohio State tomorrow.  The Illini had their game against Nebraska Wednesday postponed due to COVID-19 within the Cornhuskers program.  The Illini are 9-and-4 overall and 5-and-2 in the Big Ten.

 

Notre Dame plays host to the  Boston College Eagles in South Bend. The 3-8 Fighting Irish are hoping to break a four game losing streak and get their first conference win this weekend.

 

The NFL Divisional Round of the playoffs is this weekend.  Tomorrow the Rams will face the Packers at Lambeau Field and the Ravens visit the Bills.  On Sunday, the Chiefs host the Browns and the Buccaneers travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints. 

 

Also in the NFL

The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Urban Meyer as their new head coach, turning to one of the most successful college coaches in NCAA history to help turn around one of the NFL’s worst franchises. Meyer won three national titles while the head coach of the University of Florida and Ohio State and won 187 games across his college career.

The New York Jets have reportedly hired 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as their next head coach.  The Jets have the second overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

 

Former Chicago Cubs executive Theo Epstein is joining Major League Baseball’s front office.  Epstein has been named a consultant regarding on-field matters and will have him focus on how various rule changes might affect the game.

 

After the first round at the Sony Open in Honolulu Hawaii,  Joaquin Niemann, Jason Kokrak and Peter Malnati share the lead at eight under par.
