Tuesday Sports Update

The Illinois High School Association announced they will be working with the IDPH to clarify what the continued positive movement of multiple Regions to Tier 1, Tier 2, or even Phase 4 means for schools and sports moving forward. 

IHSA said they will send out an update to member schools & post information from today’s meeting with the Illinois Department of public Health on their website later today.

 

The Ottawa HIgh School announced yesterday that any OHS student interested in joining the Pirate Bowling team should meet at Dettores downtown lanes today at 3:30 to sign-up and  practice.

 

Over the weekend Illinois Valley Community College announced it was canceling men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball for this school year  due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. No information yet on the plans for  IVCC spring sports.

Northern Illinois will host the Ohio Bobcats in Dekalb. The Huskies are 2-10 so far this season.

The 9-5 fighting Illini  will try to break a two game losing skid at home when they face Penn State at the State Farm Center. 

The Illinois game at Michigan State on Saturday has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests within the Spartans program.  Both teams will work with the Big Ten to reschedule.

 

In College Football

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields announced on Twitter Monday that he has declared for the 2021 NFL Draft.  Fields helped the Buckeyes to two Big Ten titles and consecutive College Football Playoff appearances for the first time in school history. 

 

 Over in the NBA, Zach LaVine scored a game-high 33 points And Lauri Markkanen posted 18 points as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Houston Rockets 125-120 at the United Center. The Bulls improved to 6-and-8 and will visit the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.

 

 The Chicago Blackhawks will be seeking their first win as they wrap up their season-opening road swing tonight against the Florida Panthers. The Hawks fell 5-2 to the Panthers Sunday night.  

 

The NFL Draft combine will not take place in Indianapolis this year.  The league informed teams Monday the pre-draft player evaluation will be decentralized for the first time since 1987.  Instead, this year, the entire process will be done remotely.  All workouts will be done on individual pro days on college campuses.  The NFL will also work to determine if team reps can attend the workouts as well.

 

In Major League Baseball, the Washington Nationals are adding former Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lester to their rotation. The 37-year-old lefty was 3-and-3 with an ERA of 5.16 for the North Siders during the pandemic shortened 2020 season.
