Nicor Gas weathers the winter

By Billy Thompson Feb 23, 2021 | 3:27 PM

This month has been cold, but not too cold for Nicor Gas to keep up. Vice President of Systems Operations Dan Fox says Nicor prepares for colder winters than this one has been.

Fox says Nicor buys gas from several suppliers year-round. In the summertime, gas is compressed and stored underground in eight storage fields, including an aquifer near Troy Grove. The gas bought at lower prices is retrieved during winter and helps keep customer costs low during those higher demand periods. About 40% of the gas Nicor delivers during the winter comes from storage.

Clarification: An earlier version of this story said Nicor pumps gas into the ground. Nicor feels it is more accurate to say the gas is compressed and stored underground.
