ROOTS with ROBB: Garbage!

By Billy Thompson Feb 26, 2021 | 12:18 PM

What do you get when you take 3 music producers from Madison, Wisconsin, and pair it with a sparkplug of a female Scot…you get Garbage!  I was fortunate to discover them at a festival show in 1996 and was hooked from the first song.  Be sure to watch a full concert from 1996 below, and check out the bonus content at the end of the episode for the great story of how the guys lucked into finding Shirley!

Roots is co-hosted and brought to you by Farmer’s Insurance, the Robert Hasty Agency

Our Roots Song of the Day:

Here’s a full show from a festival in South America in 1996.  It’s cued up for ‘Stupid Girl,’ so be sure to go back to the beginning of the show to watch the whole thing if you want.

Bonus Content:

This belongs on the list as one of the best covers of all-time.  I had never heard of Screaming Females before, but was sure to seek them out after this killer rendition.  It buries 10,000 Maniacs version.

Garbage is such a different band.  I don’t know if we did a great job of talking about influences on this episode.  But this Youtube Channel for a big record store in Hollywood has a cool show called ‘What’s in my Bag,’ where they have musicians walk through the store and grab things they want to buy.  You get a pretty good sense of what they’re into from it.  It’s worth the watch.

Next Week:  Classic Album edition, Appetite for Destruction!  Robb and I will rank all 12 songs from GnR’s debut in order of our favorites!
