Wednesday Local Sports Update

Last night in Girls volleyball

Marquette defeated Low point Washburn 25-10 25-16.

Leading the Lady Crusaders were Addie McConnaughhay with 9 aces, 5 kills and 5 digs,  Kaylee Killelea had 22 assists and 3 aces and Lindsey Kaufmann added 5 kills.

 

Streator lost to Peotone 21-25, 23-25

For the Lady Bulldogs,  Natali Haynes had 3 kills, 1 block and  Jozie Cole 4 assists, 2 kills and 3 aces

Streator JV also lost to Peotone 

 

NCAA

The Final Four is set in the men’s NCAA tournament. Top-seed Gonzaga knocked off USC 85-66 while the 11th-seed Bruins beat top-seed Michigan 51-49.  The Bulldogs will face the Bruins and Houston will battle Baylor on Saturday for a spot in the National Championship Game.

 

The field is set for the Final Four in the women’s NCAA Tournament. South Carolina and Stanford square off Friday at the Alamodome, while the other Final Four matchup has top-seeded UConn clashing with third-seeded Arizona.

 

MLB

The White Sox wrapped up spring training with a 2-1 loss to the Rockies.  Connor Sadzeck suffered the defeat in relief.  Andrew Vaughn drove in the South-Siders lone run with a sac-fly in the fourth. Dylan Cease struck out eleven and allowed one run in five and a third innings. The Sox head out west to face the Angels in tomorrow night’s season opener.  Catch the game here on 1430AM WCMY.

 

The Cubs host the Pirates tomorrow on Opening Day.  The North-Siders are sending Kyle Hendricks to the mound to face Pittsburgh’s Chad Kuhl.  The Cubs will open the season as the reigning National League Central champions. 

 

The Cardinals are in Cincinnati to face the Reds on Opening Day.   Jack Flaherty takes the mounds for St. Louis against Cincinnati’s Luis Castillo.  The last time the two teams met on Opening Day was 2014.  A limited number of fans will be allowed at Great American Ball Park.

 

NHL

The Blackhawks bounced back by beating the Hurricanes 2-1 at the United Center.  Dylan Strome and Alex DeBrincat each scored early in the second period and Kevin Lankinen stopped 31 shots for the Hawks which ended a two-game skid.  The Blackhawks and Hurricanes face off again tomorrow night.

 

NBA

The Chicago Bulls visit the Suns tonight.  The Bulls  All-star Zach LaVine is questionable against Phoenix with a sprained ankle. 

 

 

The NFL is adding a 17th regular-season game this year.  League owners   approved the measure yesterday.  Players agreed to the additional game as part of the 2020 collective bargaining agreement.  The preseason will now be three games and the Super Bowl will be pushed back a week.
