Thursday Local Sports Update

Tune in tonight for the season opener of White Sox baseball. Lucas Giolito takes the mound for the South-Siders against Dylan Bundy and the Angels in Anaheim California. Pre-game begins at 830 with the first pitch at 9:05pm. Catch all the play by play action right here on 1430AM WCMY.

 

The Cubs kick off the season today at the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field against the Pirates.  The North-Siders are sending Kyle Hendricks to the mound to face Pittsburgh’s Chad Kuhl. 

Cubs president Jed Hoyer is very confident the club will reach a contract extension with first baseman Anthony Rizzo. Questions were raised about Rizzo’s future with the North-Siders after he stated earlier this week that he is at peace with his contract situation.  The three-time All Star also reiterated his deadline for a deal was opening day. The Cubs did sign yesterday veteren Tony Wolters to fill the backup catching role behind All-Star Willson Contreras. 

 

The Cardinals open the season today in Cincinnati against the Reds.  Jack Flaherty gets the start for St. Louis against Cincinnati’s Luis Castillo.  Nolan Arenado will be making his regular-season debut for the Cards. 

 

The Chicago Bulls lost in Phoenix to the Suns 121-116.  Nikola Vucevic led the Bulls with 24 points who have now lost five straight and will visit the Utah Jazz tomorrow night. 

 

The Blackhawks face off against the Hurricanes tonight at the United Center. The Hawks defeated Carolina 2-1 on Tuesday.  

 

Blackhawks President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Stan Bowman has been named the General Manager of the 2022 U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team.  Bowman will help build the staff and roster for the Beijing games, set to open on February 4th, 2022. 

 

LOCAL SPORTS

There was high school football last night and the Marquette Crusaders lost on the road to Princeville 36-14.

  • For the Crusaders quarterback Alex Graham rushed for a touchdown and went  six for fifteen  for 121 yards passing  and one touchdown. 

 

High School football continues tonight with the Streator Bulldogs hosting Herscher and the Bruins of St Bede travel to take on the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers.

 

In girls volleyball

Ottawa lost at Sandwich after three sets

  • For the Lady Pirates,  Lily Miller had 24 assists, 9 digs and 2 aces, Piper Nanouski finished with 16 kills and 8 digs

 

Marquette lost at Bader Gym to St Bede in two sets.

  • Addie McConnaughay had four kills and 10 digs, and Kaylee Killelea  added 15 assists, nine digs for the Lady Crusaders.
