Wednesday Local Sports Update

Last night José Abreu hit a grand slam as the Sox powered past the Mariners 10-4 in Seattle.  Zack Collins smacked a three-run shot and Luis Robert added a two-run blast for the Pale Hose.  

 

The Cubs mustered only one hit in a 4-1 setback to the Brewers at Wrigley Field.  Adbert Alzolay was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs over five innings in his season debut.  The North-Siders snapped a three-game win streak and  will conclude their series with the Brewers today.

 

Cubs great Fergie Jenkins will be immortalized with a statue outside Wrigley Field.  The sculpture honoring the Hall of Fame pitcher could be unveiled as early as next year.  The Jenkins statue will be the fifth to be placed around the Friendly Confines, joining Hall of Famers Ernie Banks, Ron Santo and Billy Williams, as well as broadcaster Harry Caray. 

 

The Cardinals scored three runs in the sixth in a 4-2 come from behind victory over the Marlins in Miami.  Dylan Carlson added a solo home run in the ninth for the Cards which secured its first series victory of the season.  Ryan Helsley earned the win in relief.  The three-game set wraps up today.

 

Nikola Vucevic posted 32 points and 17 rebounds as the Bulls cruised past the Pacers 113-97 in Indianapolis.  Zach LaVine had 19-points for the Bulls who will visit the Raptors tomorrow night.

Kirby Dach scored his first goal of the season as the Blackhawks held on for a 4-2 victory over the Stars at the United Center.  Dominik Kubalik, Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane also lit the lamp for the Hawks, while Kevin Lankinen stopped 25 shots in the win.  The Blackhawks host the Stars again tomorrow night. 

 

Illinois point guard  Ayo Dosunmu announced yesterday he will be entering the 2021 NBA Draft. 

 

High School Sports

 

The Lady Pirates lost in volleyball to Morris at Kingman Gym.

Ottawa was led by Lilly Miller with seven assists and five digs . Piper Nanouski added five kills.

 

Streator lost on senior night to Manteno in Volleyball

Kristen Lane led the Lady Bulldogs with nine digs, three kills and one ace

 

The  JV Crusaders defeated Princeville Monday night 38 -34 in football. 

Carson Zellers passed for 95 yards and 3 touchdowns. Peter McGrath rushed for 125 yards and had 2 touchdowns for Marquette.
