Tuesday Local Sports Update

The IHSA announced that student-athletes competing in low-risk outdoor sports – such as track and field, tennis, softball, and baseball – would not be required to wear masks while actively competing.  Competitors would be required to wear masks when on the bench or waiting to compete.

 

Yesterday The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association announced the IBCA All-State teams.

For the class 3A, Ottawa Pirates Senior Anthony Cooper was selected to the All-State team. Drake Weber from the LP Cavaliers was awarded Honorable Mentions.

For the Girls

In the Class 1A, Serena Lady Huskers Junior Katie Baker was nominated to the All-State team.

Class 1A Honorable Mentions were awarded to Serena Senior Taylor Staton and Junior from St Bede Lia Bosnich.  Seneca’s Senior Brooklyn Giertz was also awarded Honorable Mentions in the Class 2A division.

 

In girls Volleyball

Ottawa lost on the road to Morris in two sets 29-27 and 25-17.

For the Lady Pirates, Piper Nanouski had five kills and five digs, Ryleigh Stevenson had three kills and two aces and Lily Miller added nine assists and four digs.

 

Marquette lost to Seneca in 3 sets

Leading the Lady Crusaders was Addie McConnaughhay with 7 kills, 12 digs and 2 aces. Lindsey Kaufmann added 6 kills and had 10 digs and Kaylee Killelea paced the offense with 31 assists. 

 

MLB

Adam Eaton drilled a three-run homer in the third and a throwing error allowed pinch runner Nick Madrigal to score the winning run in the ninth inning as the Sox grabbed a 4-3 walk-off victory against the Indians last night.

 

The Cubs gave up all six-runs in the sixth inning in a 6-3 loss to the Brewers in Milwaukee. Kris Bryant gave the North-Siders a 1-0 lead with a homer in the fourth.  The Cubs and Brewers continue the series tonight.

 

The Cardinals dropped the series opener to the Nationals, 5-2, at Busch Stadium.  John Gant got the loss after giving up three-runs on six hits over five-innings. The Cards continue the three-game set today.

 

The Bulls lost to the Grizzlies in Memphis 101-90.  Zach LaVine scored 21 points and Thaddeus Young had 20 for Chicago.  The Bulls host the Magic tomorrow night.

 

Brandon Hagel scored in overtime to lift the Blackhawks to a 4-3 win over the Blues Jackets in Columbus. Kevin Lankinen made 30 stops in his 16th win of the season.  The Hawks continue their current five-game road trip Thursday in Detroit.

 

The Blackhawks had a busy NHL trade deadline yesterday, including acquiring forward Adam Gaudette from Vancouver in exchange for forward Matthew Highmore.  The Hawks shipped veteran forward Carl Soderberg to the Avalanche for forward Josh Dickinson and the rights to forward Ryder Rolston, then dealt forward Mattias Janmark to Vegas for future draft picks.
