Missouri elderberry industry positioned to grow

A horticulture specialist says Missouri’s elderberry industry is in a prime position to expand. Patrick Byers with University of Missouri Extension tells Brownfield there were no cultivated elderberries in the state when he started his work in 1997.

“Any products that were being produced were strictly very small-scaled cottage products coming out of people’s kitchens,” he said. “Now days, through the efforts of research and extension efforts and collaborations with innovative entrepreneurial farmers, we have a multi-million-dollar industry.”

And he said there is a lot of room for growth within the specialty crop.
